At this point, I have experienced several stages of Back to School…..

Now, I am in the… ‘When does school start?’ stage

I was around 8 years old when the excitement of “Back to School” really hit me. There was the excitement of friends I hadn’t seen all summer. I knew I would get at least one new outfit and new shoes. There were endless supplies to be bought. I sported a fresh hairstyle with not a care in the world, unless I forgot my #2 pencils. For an 8-year-old, it was the best time.

As an adult, years later with children of my own, I wanted their school experiences on the first day to be special. My son had to wear a school uniform, but his first-day outfit was a special occasion for both of us. When my daughter started school, we would have mother-daughter shopping. The next weekend was mother-son shopping. I was an educator; these times gave me a chance to spend time with my children and buy for my classroom. It was great fun, full of laughter, school supplies, new clothes, and a chance to make each child feel special. That was the best part for me.

I am now a retired educator. My son’s youngest child just graduated high school. My older grandson is in the military. I barely pay attention to the schools’ in & out days. I do appreciate the quiet after school starts, but I miss the excitement. I no longer prep for the first day, decorating my room and meeting students and parents. I do not miss getting up early, lesson plans, and kiddie breakdowns, (often from parents and teachers).

August reminds me of the hustle and bustle of a new school year. It reminds me of the briefest time when my needs were put first, my opinion mattered, and I could giggle for no reason.
