I was the kid who got the sympathy Valentine’s from the teacher.
I wasn’t popular or pretty.
I was needy and quiet, sitting at my desk reading a book.

Valentine’s Day for me wasn’t something I looked forward to. These were the days before bringing a card for each kid. We had plenty of homemade goodies, so I always liked the party.

As an educator, I was thrilled that all children were included.
As a mom, I always tried to make Valentine’s exciting for my kiddos. It was good to see different ways to commemorate the day as I grew older. Not everyone is in love with a special someone.

I really like the idea of Galentines, celebrating as a pet parent, or doing something totally senior. These other expressions of love get me excited for a holiday that used to mean nothing to me.
This year I will enjoy brunch with two of my favorite women and watch a rom-com while enjoying some wine.

Sisters, no matter how you celebrate Love Out Loud Day, I want you to love yourselves.
I encourage us to let our hair down and have fun, be silly, and laugh till our bellies hurt.
