September 10, 2025, is World Suicide Prevention Day.

Do you know how to help someone showing signs of suicide? I don’t. Do you know how it feels to believe no one wants you, loves you, or needs you? I do.

To prevent this horrible thing from touching us, what options do we have?

  • A few kind words to someone you know is struggling can be a life-saver.

There are posts all over social media encouraging us to “be kind,” to think of what others may be going through, and many more. Showing kindness by a gentle touch or a statement you heard or read that has stuck with you; share it with someone else.

  • “Let’s talk” can interrupt someone’s thoughts of suicide.

We can encourage someone struggling to change their view. Some suggestions can be:

  • take a walk
  • look out the window
  • take out the trash
  • or play music that will make you move.

I have needed help during my very low moments. I have stared at the hole that says,

“Dying would be better.”

I had friends, a minister, and family to pull me from the depths of despair. Now I tell others my story in the hope that someone finds the help they need. The biggest prevention for suicide is talking about the feelings that bring us to that place.

Talk to a trusted friend or minister, or call a hotline (988 is a national hotline).
